Job Summary
The Senior Research Director will provide strategic leadership for Research & Innovation at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts, working closely with the Clinical Director(s) of Research & Innovation and the R&I Senior Management Team to develop and deliver the research strategy and operational objectives for R&I.
Main Responsibilities
The Senior Research Director will be responsible for:
- Providing oversight of the performance of R&I and ensuring stretching targets are set and met each year, including delivering financial sustainability.
- Working closely with the Clinical Director(s) of Research and Innovation and SMT in setting standards and objectives for research, and providing support to SMT colleagues when there are challenges.
- Providing leadership for the development, delivery, and performance management of our Research Strategy and the growth of the research portfolio, ensuring regular review and updating of plans.
- Acting as an ambassador for health and care research, internally and externally, and representing the Trust at regional and national forums.
- Being a visible leader and actively promoting a culture of staff development, collaboration, positive staff experience, wellbeing, and inclusion, embedding patient, carer, and public involvement at all appropriate levels of decision making.
- Working in close partnership with the Trust's corporate teams to ensure R&I's compliance with regulations, policies, and standards.
- Communicating the Trust's research vision and plans to internal staff and external agencies, to raise the profile and highlight the benefits of research activity within the Trust.
- Working with academic and commercial partners to allow increasing academic delivery across the Trust.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have:
- Professional knowledge acquired through a degree, supplemented by specialist training to masters or equivalent level, management qualification, or equivalent experience.
- Significant evidenced continual professional development within the research environment.
- Strong experience of clinical trials management and related methodology.
- Significant experience at a complex organisation within the Healthcare Research sector at very senior manager level, including responsibility for strategic planning and budgets.
- A detailed understanding of research funding environment in the UK.
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the key issues concerning clinical and research governance.
- Experience of developing and delivering research strategy.
