South Ayrshire Council, United Kingdom NHS Scotland Full time
About the Role

NHS Scotland is committed to fostering a culture of equality and diversity among its workforce, aiming to eliminate unlawful discrimination and create a truly representative team. Each employee should feel respected and valued, enabling them to contribute their best.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran, one of 14 territorial NHS Boards in Scotland, is dedicated to a culture that is Caring, Safe, and Respectful. As a key member of our team, you will work collaboratively in a safe, caring, and respectful environment.

To learn more about NHS Ayrshire and Arran, please visit our website at NHS Ayrshire & Arran - Home.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead, manage, and develop a team of pharmacy technicians and support workers, working closely with senior pharmacists to support the delivery of the pharmacotherapy service, including prescribing improvement plans. You will also contribute to the work of the primary care pharmacy teams to provide pharmaceutical care to patients in GP practices and care homes, ensuring safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of medicines.

This is a critical role within the primary care pharmacy team, requiring strong team management and leadership skills. A significant part of this post will be to further develop the role of General Practice Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers and to identify training needs. The post demands a certain degree of autonomous working, being responsible for your own outcomes, and contributing to the prescribing support team objectives. This will require self-direction, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

Requirements

Good knowledge of medicines management and recent developments in prescribing work in GP practices is essential. A flexible and adaptable approach is necessary, with evidence of project and team work being advantageous. Good communication, organisational, and IT skills, along with the ability to work with patients and other healthcare professionals, are also required.

You will have substantial experience as a qualified pharmacy technician, registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, with a commitment to Continuous Professional Development. The post requires SQA Higher National Unit Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) or community pharmacy equivalent, or the ability to demonstrate a highly specialised level of pharmacy knowledge, skills, clinical reasoning, and judgement, and HNC Pharmacy Services Development and Management (or currently undertaking), or equivalent qualifications to the same level. The Personal Development Award (or working towards) and a management qualification would be desirable.

Working Arrangements

This is a fixed-term/secondment position until December 2025. You will be required to work over 7 days and/or an extended working day, in accordance with AfC Terms and Conditions. A driving licence and car ownership are essential for this role.
