Research Scientist in Machine Learning for Autonomous Systems

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Scientist to join our team at Heriot-Watt University. The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating the automation of processes used to optimize Complex Optical Systems using Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct scientific research and analysis to develop and implement ML and AI algorithms for optical system alignment.
- Collaborate with our team of experts in robotics, mechatronics, and optical engineering to design and develop innovative solutions for complex optical systems.
- Develop and maintain experimental and theoretical models to optimize optical system alignment processes.
- Work closely with our industry partners, including Leonardo, to translate research into practical applications.
- Contribute to the development of new technologies and methodologies for optical system design and assembly.
- PhD or Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Theoretical Physics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or closely related subject.
- Significant experience in programming languages, such as Python, Matlab, or C++.
- Strong background in machine learning and AI, with experience in implementing ML and AI algorithms for complex systems.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to articulate research work through written technical reports, academic publishing, and oral presentations.
- Experience in programming for data acquisition and control, such as LabVIEW or Arduino.
- Knowledge of optical modeling software, such as Comsol, Matlab, or Zemax.
- Understanding of robotic and mechatronic systems, including design, programming, and construction.
- Experience in laser system design, including optical, mechanical, and thermal design.
- Ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary team environment.
