Join us in our pursuit of innovation and excellence as a Research Scientist in Machine Learning for Autonomous Alignment

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Scientist to join our team in the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences. As a Research Scientist, you will play a key role in investigating the automation of processes used to optimise Complex Optical Systems using Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligent technologies.

About the Project:

This project is part of a major initiative focused on automating alignment processes with systems that exploit state-of-the-art robotics (i.e. mechatronic) that combine sensing and machine intelligence to create a step change in the speed and accuracy of the process.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct scientific research and analysis in the field of Machine Learning and Autonomous Systems.
  • Develop and implement advanced optimisation and AI/ML approaches using techniques such as transfer and reinforcement learning, supervised and unsupervised methods, and classical and multi-objective optimisation.
  • Design and develop adaptive, possibly human-inspired, strategies for learning complex multi-step alignment processes.
  • Collaborate with engineers from Leonardo and the National Robotarium to execute project tasks.
  • Participate in Knowledge Transfer Meetings and Workshops with a broad range of Leonardo personnel.

Requirements:

  • Masters or PhD level degree in a relevant area such as Theoretical Physics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or closely related subject.
  • Significant experience of programming (e.g. Python, Matlab etc.) is essential.
  • Ability to articulate research work via written technical reports, academic publishing and by oral presentation.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new digital skills and capabilities appropriate to your role and how it evolves.
  • Ability to formulate and progress work on your own initiative with evidence of research ability: problem solving, flexibility.

About Our Team:

Heriot-Watt University is leading the development of high-power lasers, with potential applications in industrial material processing and defence. Our team is passionate about innovation and excellence, and we are looking for like-minded individuals to join us on this exciting journey
