Principal Mechanical Engineer

Leonardo is seeking a highly skilled Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our IR Sensors team in Southampton. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and developing next-generation IR sensors for space and defence applications.
Key Responsibilities:- Design and develop mechanical solutions for IR sensors, ensuring compliance with engineering lifecycle requirements.
- Conduct research and development of mechanical solutions and techniques to advance the next generation of IR detectors.
- Support programme teams in delivering product technical solutions for mechanical engineering aspects.
- Generate mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
- Design and develop product and production tool/fixture designs, including fine detail definition.
- Use 3D CAD tools for mechanical design and development.
- Participate in practical implementation of development builds and design of experiments.
- Support procurement and manufacturing during the introduction of new products into the development/production lifecycle phase.
- Manage work package delivery elements to achieve desired quality, schedule, and cost.
- Mentor junior members of the cameras team with respect to engineering competencies and best practices.
- Minimum upper second-class degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
- Experience working within a highly regulated engineering industry.
- Skilled 3D CAD user, ideally with PTC Creo.
- Problem-solving skills using a structured, logical approach.
- Experience with mechanical engineering detailed design, including numerical calculations and tolerance studies.
- Working knowledge of BS8888 drawing standards and GD&T.
- Knowledge of DFM/A and accustomed to working within a multi-discipline engineering team.
- MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience working in defence, space, or medical sectors.
- Knowledgeable in working with vacuum assemblies.
- Hands-on experience with optical assemblies.
- Experience in designing electro-mechanical products.
- Familiar with designing for harsh environments, including EMC.
- Awareness of mechanical and thermal analysis, including 'first pass' analyses.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering industry trends and new tools, techniques, and technologies.
- Industrial experience in tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements.
- Experience in design of vibration test fixtures.
