Job Title: Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary:

Leonardo is seeking a skilled Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join our IR Sensors team. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and developing next-generation IR sensors for space and defense applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical solutions for IR sensors, ensuring compliance with engineering lifecycle requirements.
  • Conduct research and development of mechanical solutions and techniques to advance the next generation of IR detectors.
  • Support the program team in delivering product technical solutions for mechanical engineering aspects.
  • Generate mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
  • Develop product and production tool/fixture designs, including fine detail definition.
  • Use 3D CAD tools for mechanical design and development.
  • Participate in practical implementation of development builds and design of experiments.
  • Support procurement and manufacturing during the introduction of new products into the development/production lifecycle phase.
  • Manage work package delivery elements to achieve desired quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Mentor junior members of the team with respect to engineering competencies and best practices.

Requirements:

  • Upper second-class degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated engineering industry.
  • Skilled 3D CAD user, preferably with PTC Creo.
  • Problem-solving skills using a structured, logical approach.
  • Mechanical engineering detailed design experience, including numerical calculations and tolerance studies.
  • Working knowledge of BS8888 drawing standards and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with DFM/A aspects.
  • Ability to work in a multi-discipline engineering team to deliver to schedule, cost, and quality targets.

Desirable:

  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience working in defense, space, or medical sectors.
  • Knowledge of working with vacuum assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with optical assemblies.
  • Experience designing electro-mechanical products.
  • Familiarity with designing for harsh environments, including EMC.
  • Appreciation of mechanical and thermal analysis, including 'first pass' analyses.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering industry trends and new tools, techniques, and technologies.
  • Industrial experience in tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements.
  • Experience designing vibration test fixtures.
