Job Title: Mechanical Engineer for IR Sensors Development

Leonardo is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our IR Sensors Team, working on the design and development of next-generation IR sensors for space and defence sectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for the entire engineering lifecycle, from concept design to production support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compliance of mechanical engineering solutions through the entire engineering lifecycle.
  • Research and development of mechanical solutions and techniques to advance the next generation of IR detectors.
  • Support programme teams in the delivery of product technical solutions.
  • Generate mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
  • Product and production tool/fixture design.
  • Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools.
  • Hands-on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and design of experiments.
  • Support procurement and manufacturing during the introduction of new products into the development/production lifecycle phase.
  • Actively manage work package delivery elements to achieve desired quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Mentoring junior members of the team with respect to engineering competencies and best practices.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of an upper second-class degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Experience of working within a highly regulated engineering industry.
  • Experienced 3D CAD user, ideally PTC Creo.
  • Problem-solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
  • Mechanical engineering detailed design experience.
  • Working knowledge of BS8888 drawing standards and the application of GD&T.
  • Knowledge of various aspects of DFM/A.
  • Accustomed to working within a multi-discipline engineering team to deliver to schedule, cost, and quality targets.

Desirable:

  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience working in defence, space, or medical sectors.
  • Knowledgeable in working with vacuum assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience in working with optical assemblies.
  • Experience in the design of electro-mechanical products.
  • Familiar in designing for harsh environments, including EMC.
  • Appreciation of mechanical and thermal analysis, including 'first pass' analyses.
  • Mechanical engineering industry trends.
  • Industrial experience in tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements.
  • Experience in design of vibration test fixtures.
