Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our Community Neuro and Stroke Team.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapist who has a keen interest in the field of neurological rehabilitation and would like to develop their knowledge and skills in this area. You will work closely alongside and be supported by other Specialist staff in the team. NHS experience is essential.

Main Duties:
  • Act as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the Community Neuro and Stroke Team, providing specialist care to adults with dysphagia and/or communication impairment following diagnosis of neurological injury/condition.
  • Provide advisory/educational service to patients, relatives, therapists, and other healthcare professionals in the specialist field of SLT.
  • Take a role in the specialist assessment and treatment of patients who may have complex and chronic presentation, and to determine clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated.
  • Manage a defined caseload using evidence based / client centred principles to access, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • Provide leadership and clinical supervision for other junior staff as delegated by manager and/or professional supervisor.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • Diploma/Degree Speech and Language Therapy.
  • HCPC Registration.

Experience:

  • NHS experience essential.
  • Post registration experience in neurological rehabilitation and condition management.
  • Experience of working with multi agencies.
  • Experience of working in an interdisciplinary team and independently.
  • Experience of liaison with other professionals and partnership work.
  • Experience of supervising students and staff from different professions.

Skills:

  • Evidence of working without direct supervision and being able to use own initiative.
  • Ability to work autonomously within specialist clinical area.
  • Good analytical judgement skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and non-verbal communication with the ability to motivate people and empathise with the challenges of long term condition management.
  • The ability to understand and respect different points of view working with people from a variety of cultures.
  • Good literacy in computer use i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Excellent time management skills/ability to prioritise own caseload with the education and supervision of team members and support/delegate the organisation of the caseload of support staff.
  • High level clinical reasoning skills and problem solving skills.

Knowledge:

  • Specialist knowledge in relevant clinical skills and approaches to patient management.
  • Specialist knowledge of a wide range of neurological conditions.
  • Awareness of challenges of partnership and multi-agency working.
  • Knowledge of research/audit.
  • Working knowledge of Evidence Based Practice.
  • Evidence of clinical and professional post qualification training and education.
  • Demonstrate and evidence commitment to lifelong learning.
