Main Responsibilities

The role of Consultant in Palliative Medicine involves providing specialist advice, support, and education throughout the hospital, with a focus on delivering high-quality care to patients with palliative and end-of-life needs.

The Consultant will work closely with the Clinical Lead and other members of the Division Management Team to develop and implement policies and strategies for palliative care services within the Trust.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to medical audit, service improvement, and integration initiatives, as well as provide clinical leadership and support to the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Consultant care, advice, and support across acute hospital care settings.
  • Develop close working relationships with hospital clinical teams to provide remote clinical advice and undertake clinical reviews and assessments.
  • Contribute to the leadership and development of palliative care services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director.

Person Specification:

  • GMC registration.
  • CCT or equivalent in Palliative Medicine.
  • Advanced communication skills and ability to lead a multi-professional team.
  • Certificate/Diploma in Palliative Care and postgraduate teaching qualification.

Clinical Experience:

  • Ability to undertake palliative care assessments in various settings, including hospice, outpatient clinics, hospital wards, and community.
  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT/CESR or within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CESR.

Teaching & Research:

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals and experience of research and applying outcomes to clinical practice.

Leadership & Management:

  • Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills and evidence of leadership skills training.
  • Experience of effective management and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Attributes:

  • Caring and empathetic attitude to patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, hospital staff, and other agencies.
  • Clinical integrity with an open and honest approach with patients, clinical colleagues, and the MDT.
