About the role

The Revenue Fraud Specialist will play a vital part in preventing, mitigating, deterring, and detecting prolific fare evasion and fraud that impacts upon our business.

You will be responsible for ensuring evidence is lawfully and securely gathered during an investigation, championing compliance with criminal investigative legislation to safely recover losses.

A key aspect of this role will be supporting regional revenue protection duties and operations as required.

This position will mainly work within the main revenue recovery function but may be deployed into specific investigations elsewhere within the business when necessary.

Successful candidates will be line-managed on a day-to-day basis by an Assistant Fraud Manager.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Supporting Fraud Managers in delivering the GWR Revenue Protection and Counter-Fraud Strategy.
  • Conducting reactive investigations to both the criminal and civil standards of proof, including obtaining witness statements, conducting interviews under caution, and case file preparation.
  • Complying with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) and the Criminal Procedures Investigation Act 1996.
  • Participating in Revenue Protection and Fraud Intelligence gathering activities.
  • Collaborating across functions internally and externally to ensure successful outcomes of initiatives and programs using available options.
  • Preventing, mitigating, deterring, and detecting prolific fare evasion and fraud impacting upon our business.
  • Participating in proactive fraud prevention exercises on trains and at stations and within the wider workplace.
  • Promoting a positive counter-fraud culture among the traveling public and within the workforce.
  • Assessing situations where Great Western Railway business and/or reputation may suffer disproportionately, exercising discretion where appropriate to prevent harm.
  • Ensuring personal safety and that of others.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Experience of investigating to the criminal and/or civil standards of proof.
  • An understanding of the role of revenue protection on the railway.
  • Strong communication skills, ensuring effective two-way communication with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally to meet departmental and corporate goals.
  • Capacity to identify and objectively review evidence from multiple sources.
  • Awareness of responsibilities regarding personal information and confidentiality under the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to build strong working relationships with colleagues and external partners.
  • Able to focus on the reputation of the business in all actions.
