Job Title: Legal Officer

As a Legal Officer in the Royal Air Force, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the organisation within the frameworks of rules and regulations. You will advise military commanders and staff on domestic and international humanitarian law, as well as military law, air law, employment law, European law, health and safety, and environmental law.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Advise on domestic and international humanitarian law
  • Advise on military law, air law, employment law, European law, health and safety, and environmental law
  • Develop and draft legislation related to the Armed Forces
  • Act as Legal Adviser to service inquiry panels
  • Advocate for the defence or prosecution at Courts Martial, Service Civilian Courts, and Summary Appeal Courts
  • Advise military police and commanders on criminal investigations, evidence gathering, interviewing, and pre- and post-change custody
  • Advise personnel on the Armed Forces Act 2006 and related procedures and regulations
  • Provide legal training across all ranks and branches of the RAF
Requirements:
  • Be a member of the Bar of England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland, with completed pupillage, or be a solicitor admitted to the Roll of England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland
  • Have at least 18 months post-qualification experience
  • Hold a full UK driving license
  • Be aged 24-47 years old (must attest before 48th birthday)
  • Be a citizen of the UK or the Republic of Ireland, holder of dual UK/other nationality, or have been a Commonwealth citizen since birth
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 years' service
  • Pass the Defence Aptitude Test and a fitness test
