University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Pharmacist Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our pharmacy department, you will play a vital role in providing clinical expertise and support to our patients and staff.
Main DutiesThe successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a variety of clinical rotations, including:
- Medicine: You will have the chance to work in one of the following specialities: respiratory, gastro/hepatology, elderly care, or Acute Medical Unit (AMU). Your responsibilities will include supporting ward rounds and attending multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Neurosciences: You will work in a tertiary referral centre for neurology and neurosurgery, covering neurosurgical wards and other specialities such as stroke and spinal. You will also encounter other neurological conditions during your rotation.
- Surgery: You will provide ward cover to a specific surgical area, such as maxillo-facial, lower/upper gastrointestinal. You will attend the morning ward round, attend a microbiology multidisciplinary ward round, and develop skills in nutrition support and intestinal failure.
- Critical Care: You will work with the consultant pharmacist and experienced Critical Care pharmacists, attending consultant-led multidisciplinary ward rounds. You will spend time on the Surgical High Dependency Unit and General, Cardiac, and Neuro Intensive Care Units.
- Cardiovascular and Thoracics: You will work as part of the cardiovascular and thoracic care group pharmacy team, gaining experience in cardiology, cardiac surgery, thoracic and vascular surgery, and congenital heart disease.
- Microbiology: You will work as part of a highly respected team, participating in antibiotic stewardship activities, including microbiology and infectious diseases ward rounds and surveillance of prescribing and resistance trends.
- Oncology: You will work in a dedicated oncology pharmacy, involved in all stages of the process from initial screening to checking the final item. You will also provide ward cover to one of our specialist oncology wards.
- Children's Services: You will have the opportunity to work in a self-directed training pack to introduce children's pharmacy, covering a broad experience across different services, providing ward cover, and attending relevant ward rounds.
- Diabetes and Endocrine: You will work in a variety of roles in local and regional project work around diabetes and endocrinology, alongside developing further clinical skills in diabetes and endocrinology inpatient and outpatient activity.
- Management: You will support the Lead Pharmacist Operations and Supply Services to develop management and leadership skills and develop evidence for these competencies in the advanced practice curriculum.
You will be expected to provide some support to trainee pharmacists, get involved with formulary applications and other budgetary matters, and provide teaching to various health professionals, undertake audit work, and develop guidelines.
Person SpecificationThe ideal candidate will have:
- Essential: Masters Degree in Pharmacy, GPhC registration, sound knowledge of a surgical or medical speciality acquired working within a suitable speciality, meets Foundation framework/GLF competencies, audit and evaluative work, sound understanding of healthcare priorities and political agendas, experience of teaching and tutoring.
- Desirable: Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience, MRPharmS or equivalent, working towards RPS Advanced Core portfolio submission, training in medicines information, preparation of prescribing guidelines.
The successful candidate will be a strong communicator, have attention to detail, report writing, presentation skills, Microsoft Office skills, organisational skills, problem-solving, time management, prioritisation, negotiation skills, influencing, and change management skills.
