Job Summary

As a Biomedical Scientist Specialist at NHS Blood and Transplant, you will be part of a dynamic scientific and clinical team, working alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to contribute to saving and improving patients' lives.

The National Bacteriology Laboratory plays a leading role in transfusion and transplantation microbiology, both nationally and internationally, with close links with UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), universities, and international biomedical companies.

Main Duties

You will be responsible for performing, analyzing, recording, and interpreting a wide range of specialist bacteriological investigations related to blood and tissue products.

You will also support and train new and less experienced staff, handle blood and tissue samples, operate laboratory analyzers and equipment, and provide specialist bacteriological advice to various service users.

Some Saturday working will be required on a rotational basis.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Broad knowledge and experience in bacteriology and bacterial identification gained through previous experience working as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Experience in specialized manual and automated bacteriological laboratory techniques using complex equipment.
  • Experience in prioritizing and issuing work to other staff and monitoring progress to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Understanding of UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice, and UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS).
  • Experience of training and mentoring staff.

Qualifications and Training

  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Science graduate with relevant postgraduate training in bacteriology and bacterial identification.
  • Evidence of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development relevant to the post and work of the laboratory.
