This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Greater London Authority (GLA) in a policy role, supporting Labour Assembly Members and driving change for Londoners. The GLA scrutinises the work of the Mayor across various policy areas.
There are two roles within the policy team:
- One role supports Labour Assembly Members on the Planning portfolio, focusing on the London Plan due for adoption in 2027.
- The other role specialises in and supports Labour Assembly Members on the Economy and Fire portfolios.
Portfolios may change over time based on political priorities.
In this position, you will conduct research and develop solutions for pressing issues facing Londoners. You will provide research, policy briefings, advice, and support to Labour Assembly Members in your research areas. Collaborating with Members, you will draft reports to publication standard on important issues for Londoners, ensure Members have the latest policy research, and play a significant role in holding the Mayor accountable through Mayor's Question Time.
Excellent organisational, research, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential for this role, along with a background in related policy areas being advantageous. Political experience is desirable. A talent for communicating and influencing both verbally and in writing is required.
Key Responsibilities
- To deliver high-quality research, policy, communications, advice, and support to the Assembly Member(s) across their GLA functions, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and producing policy or constituency issue reports to publication standard.
- To act as the primary point of contact for GLA officers regarding London Assembly scrutiny activities related to Group Members' roles and interests, ensuring effective two-way communication and suggestions to maximise Members' positions and impact in the work of the Assembly; and to contribute effectively and proactively to Members' functions in respect of Mayor's Question Time, Functional Body Question Time, and other Assembly meetings.
- To develop and implement comprehensive, proactive, and effective communications strategies for assigned Assembly Members, working closely with the Stakeholder and Communications Officer and relevant Research & Support Officer at all times; and to monitor relevant media activity and provide timely advice to relevant Assembly Members, including early warnings of potential issues, items of local media interest, and support in relation to online and social media.
- To manage allocated resources according to the Authority's policies and Code of Ethics and Standards; to promote equality of opportunities and diversity by realising the benefits of London's diverse communities; and to participate in multi-discipline cross-departmental and organisational groups and task teams with a flexible approach to work.
Requirements
- Demonstrable research skills to quickly grasp information from various sources on a wide range of policy topics and proven experience in policy briefing in a political/public sector organisation.
- Demonstrable verbal and written communication skills, including experience in writing different document styles for diverse audiences, often within short timescales; experience in producing information specifically for media work and/or briefings for media interviews; ability to use a range of software and media.
- Experience in working directly with influential, high-profile individuals in a pressured environment and dealing with confidential/sensitive issues and documents; ability to work in a politically complex organisation and apply political awareness.
- Knowledge and understanding of media handling techniques, including designing and delivering an effective communications plan for an elected politician.
- Ability to utilise the latest information and communication technologies in relation to media issues, including designing or commissioning leaflets, newsletters, and other documents.
Competencies
- Communicating and Influencing - presenting information and arguments clearly and convincingly so that others see us as credible and articulate, and engage with us.
- Planning and Organising - thinking ahead, managing time, priorities, and risk, and developing structured and efficient approaches to deliver work on time and to a high standard.
- Research and Analysis - gathering intelligence from varied sources, making sense of it, testing its validity, and drawing conclusions that can lead to practical benefits.
- Problem Solving - analysing and interpreting situations from a variety of viewpoints and finding creative, workable, and timely solutions.
This role is based at City Hall, located near the Royal Docks in London, E16 1ZE area.
