We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Disability Rights Division Intern at Human Rights Watch. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the organization's mission of defending human rights worldwide.

About the Role

As a Disability Rights Division Intern, you will work closely with our staff to conduct research, draft reports, and participate in meetings with disability experts. You will also have the opportunity to attend lectures, trainings, and events related to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct desk research on disability rights issues, including shackling or chaining of people with psychosocial disabilities, involuntary hospitalization and treatment, abuses in residential institutions, and existing good practices;
  • Participate in meetings with disability experts and contribute to the development of reports and advocacy efforts;
  • Assist with other projects as they arise, matching your interests and abilities;
Requirements
  • You must be enrolled in a graduate-level academic program for the duration of the internship, either in the United Kingdom or Belgium;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required;
  • Fluency in another language is desirable;
  • Interest and/or experience in the disability rights field is highly valued;
  • Relevant coursework in disability rights, human rights, law, and/or policy is a plus;
  • You must possess valid work authorization in Belgium or the United Kingdom for the duration of the internship;
Compensation and Benefits

The estimated salary for this position is £13.85 per hour, with 20 days of vacation prorated per year. In Belgium, interns who are currently enrolled in a masters or law program will be reimbursed for their lunch and local travel costs, while recent graduates will receive a gross stipend of €1035.
