SEMH Teaching Assistant Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our team at a reputable secondary school in Levenshulme. As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health needs, helping them to access learning and thrive in the school environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual and small group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them to manage their emotions and develop coping strategies.
  • Assist classroom teachers in implementing tailored support plans for students, promoting positive behaviour and social skills.
  • Work closely with the SENCO and other staff to provide holistic support for each student, contributing to a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Support students in regulating their behaviour during moments of stress or frustration, using de-escalation techniques and positive role modelling.
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teachers and parents, collaborating with the wider pastoral team to address any additional needs or concerns.
Requirements:
  • A strong interest in supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Experience working with young people in an educational, care, or support role is beneficial but not essential.
  • Patience, resilience, and the ability to stay calm in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • An understanding of SEMH challenges and strategies for supporting students in managing their mental health.
