SEMH Teaching Assistant – Full-Time in Levenshulme

Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant for a full-time position at an Ofsted-rated 'Good' secondary school in Levenshulme. This role is set to start in October and will run until the end of the academic year, with the potential to become a permanent position based on performance. The weekly pay ranges from £419.25 to £500.

Role Overview:

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide essential support to students with social, emotional, and mental health needs, helping them to access learning and thrive in the school environment. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to work with young people who face barriers to education and support them in managing their emotions, developing coping strategies, and improving their overall engagement in school life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting students with SEMH needs in both one-on-one and small group settings
  • Assisting classroom teachers by implementing tailored support plans for students
  • Promoting positive behaviour and social skills, encouraging students to manage their emotions constructively
  • Helping students to build confidence and resilience, developing strategies to cope with challenging situations
  • Working closely with the SENCO and other staff to provide holistic support for each student
  • Contributing to the creation of a safe and inclusive learning environment
  • Assisting with de-escalation techniques and supporting students in regulating their behaviour during moments of stress or frustration
  • Building trusting relationships with students, acting as a mentor and positive role model
  • Monitoring student progress and providing feedback to teachers and parents
  • Collaborating with the wider pastoral team to address any additional needs or concerns
  • Supporting the emotional wellbeing of students by providing a nurturing and supportive presence

Candidate Requirements:

  • A strong interest in supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health needs
  • Experience working with young people in an educational, care, or support role is beneficial but not essential
  • Patience, resilience, and the ability to stay calm in challenging situations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students and staff
  • An understanding of SEMH challenges and strategies for supporting students in managing their mental health
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people
  • A background in psychology, counselling, or education would be advantageous, but not required
