About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Technical Director - Ecology Lead to spearhead the expansion of our Northern ecology and biodiversity services. This role offers the chance to build a new team in the region while working closely with the national Ecology Director.
With the autonomy to shape the direction of the team, you will oversee project delivery, drive new business, and nurture client relationships, all while growing and developing the team. This is an ideal role for someone who is passionate about leadership, business growth, and ecological expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Team Building & Development
- Establish and lead a high-performing ecology team within the Northern region (remote working options available).
- Support and mentor team members, encouraging professional growth and a positive working culture.
- Oversee the recruitment and development of staff, ensuring the team is structured for long-term success.
- Drive team performance by setting objectives, managing workloads, and ensuring high-quality output.
Client & Business Development
- Build and maintain relationships with clients, ensuring that their needs are met and expectations exceeded.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities, leveraging your ecological expertise and industry knowledge.
- Act as the face of the ecology department in the Northern region, representing the company at industry events and in client meetings.
- Develop and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders across multiple sectors.
Project Leadership & Management
- Oversee the successful delivery of a wide variety of ecology projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
- Provide technical input and oversight on complex ecological and biodiversity projects, supporting your team's development.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental standards across projects.
- Balance technical delivery with leadership responsibilities, taking a hands-on approach when required.
Strategic Input & Decision Making
- Contribute to the overall business strategy for the ecology division, providing input into regional plans and long-term goals.
- Take ownership of decisions within the ecology function, ensuring they align with the broader business strategy.
- Play a key role in shaping the future direction of the company's ecology offering in the Northern region, working closely with senior leadership.
Qualifications & Skills
- 10+ years of experience in ecology and biodiversity, with a proven track record of delivering successful projects.
- MCIEEM / CEcol / CEnv qualifications are highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams, with a focus on people development.
- Strong client-facing skills with the ability to build long-term relationships and manage senior stakeholders.
- Proven project management experience, including the ability to lead complex and diverse ecological projects.
- Expertise in relevant environmental legislation and strong commercial awareness.
