Job Description

The Role

At WHSmith, we're seeking a highly skilled Reward Manager to join our People team. This critical role will drive forward our overall Reward agenda, encompassing our Travel, International, High Street, Group functions, and Online businesses.

The role purpose is to support the development and delivery of an engaging, competitive, and commercial total reward offer for our colleagues across the group, aligned with our Group Strategy and Values framework. The aim is to attract, retain, and engage talent, driving business performance and cultural change.

The role holder will support the design and implementation of reward schemes, systems, policies, and frameworks, taking a leading role in cyclical reward activities, including pay reviews, salary surveys, bonus, and pay gap reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the governance and ongoing development of the reward structure and framework
  • Provide support to the People team with role levelling and benchmarking, ensuring alignment with the reward framework

Benchmarking

  • Annual participation in industry salary and benefits surveys, ensuring access to market data
  • Conduct job evaluations and salary benchmarking exercises, maintaining competitive remuneration packages

Cyclical Reward Activities

  • Pay Reviews: Key role in planning and implementing annual pay reviews across the UK for stores and support centres
  • Bonus: Ownership of bonus spreadsheets and calculations, supporting cascading bonus plans, reporting, and communications

Reward Projects

  • Support the maintenance and delivery of recognition policy and processes
  • Benefits reviews and implementation of changes, new benefits, processes, and systems

Reward Policies and Processes

  • Create, update, and own reward and benefits policies
  • Support International People team in international reward-related activity as required

Stakeholder Management

  • Internal: People partners, supporting on reward queries and benchmarking
  • External: Build strong relationships with suppliers, enhancing the business's reputation in the HR and compensation and benefits marketplace

Requirements

This role requires a proactive reward professional with experience in compensation and benefits, influencing senior stakeholders, and managing volume data. Previous experience in retail or similar environments is desirable.

  • Proven experience in designing and implementing incentive and benefits schemes up to senior management level
  • Advanced analytical skills, with a strong passion for data, and ability to present findings effectively
  • Excellent attention to detail and written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of external developments and emerging best practice in compensation and benefits
