About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the East Kennet Primary Care Network as a General Practice Assistant, working at Old School Surgery in Bedwyn. The role combines administrative duties and hands-on clinical work, supporting the GPs in the smooth running of clinics.
Main Responsibilities
- Review clinical postal correspondence, undertaking or prioritizing actions required by the GP or other team members.
- Signposting some post to other members of the wider team, such as the clinical pharmacist.
- Arranging appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patients.
- Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign.
- Ensuring patients are prepared for GP appointments, with relevant history and basic readings available.
- Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
- Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies, getting a non-call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP continues with their consultation.
Clinical Skills
- Undertaking tasks for which you have received appropriate training following practice policy and procedures.
- Making accurate and comprehensive notes in medical records as appropriate.
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during, and after patient care interventions and examinations.
- Assisting in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted.
- Giving accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within your competence.
- Supporting and monitoring patients during nebulisation therapy.
- Measuring and recording physiological measurements in routine presentations.
Administrative and Professional Responsibilities
- Able to obtain and document informed consent (either verbal or written).
- Ensuring accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients' notes on the clinical computer system as appropriate.
- Maintaining accurate patient records and entering onto the computer using agreed Read Codes.
- Ensuring accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient healthcare and registration with the Practice.
- Dealing with telephone enquiries appropriately and according to Practice policy.
- Able to perform Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation according to current UK guidelines.
Person Specification
- GCSE/NVQ level 2 or equivalent; or detailed patient services knowledge.
- Must have customer/patient care skills and have worked in a customer/patient-facing environment.
- Secretarial experience is essential.
- Competence in Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Ability to compile and analyse statistical information.
