About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as a Head of Internal Controls. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the financial, operational, and compliance control environment of our growing and ambitious FTSE 250 business.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the creation of a new Internal Controls team and leading the implementation, enhancement, ongoing monitoring, and reporting of financial, operational, and compliance controls across multiple business areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Monitor Control Framework: Develop and maintain a robust control framework across finance and operational business areas, ensuring that controls are effective and efficient.
  • Control Testing and Review: Develop and deliver a control testing program for financial, reporting, operational, and compliance controls, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
  • Process Improvement: Oversee the end-to-end review of business processes, identifying opportunities for automation, process, controls, and governance improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce risk.
  • Reporting and Communication: Deliver clear and concise reporting to senior management and Board committees, articulating findings and impact on the business.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Provide support, advice, and education to the business on internal control and operational best practices, including the impact of new UK Corporate Governance Code requirements.
  • Team Leadership: Develop a target operating model for the internal controls team, recruiting new roles and providing ongoing coaching and support to new team members.
Requirements
  • Qualifications: Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) or equivalent.
  • Experience: Experience in a similar risk, internal control, or audit role, ideally within a regulated industry.
  • Skills: Critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Personal Qualities: Adaptability, resilience, and a strong sense of integrity.
