Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Consultant to join our team at Princess Alice Hospice. As a key member of our medical team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care, leading clinical teams, and contributing to the development of our palliative care services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the weekly in-patient ward round and provide medical leadership when needed.
  • Provide ward reviews and Consultant ward-cover when needed and provide clinical supervision and support to middle grade staff.
  • Work closely with external healthcare professionals GPs, district nurses and hospital specialists to provide support, advice and continuity of care.
  • Manage hospice patients within an MPT approach, providing urgent and planned medical reviews for patients when in their home, as an outpatient or as hospice inpatients as needed.
  • Complete holistic, medical assessments and formulate clear management plans, in close collaboration with the rest of the MPT, patients and their families.
  • Maintain ongoing medical care for Princess Alice Hospice (PAH) patients, reviewing signs and symptoms and to negotiate/update management plans accordingly with the rest of the MPT, the patients and their families.
  • Maintain accurate and clear, contemporaneous clinical records i.e. appropriately updated electronic patient records.
  • Provide excellent communication/handover of clinical information by telephone, email or in writing as appropriate, ensuring that all relevant in-house/external healthcare professionals are up to date with clinical events e.g. letters to general practitioners.
  • Attend appropriate community MPT meetings.
  • Coordinate with colleagues to help in the prioritising of admissions to and discharges from; the community caseload; and the inpatient unit.
  • Coordinate with colleagues to assess and manage patients in the Wellbeing Centre as necessary.
  • Work flexibly with the medical team and to provide cover for colleagues and the wider MPT as appropriate.
  • Help with induction, education and supervision of medical students and visiting doctors as appropriate.
Requirements
  • Commitment to the specialty and its future development.
  • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice).
  • On the Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine (or within 3 months of their CCT date at the time of interview).
  • Diploma in Palliative Medicine or equivalent.
  • Flexible approach to work: able to adapt and work with employer to deliver improved patient care.
  • Equality and diversity: promotes equality and values diversity.
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
  • Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Able to comfortably engage with clinical uncertainties and constructive clinical debate with medical and nursing colleagues.
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, evidence of relevant academic and research achievements.
  • Educational supervision training and experience.
