Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Palliative Medicine Consultant to join our team at Princess Alice Hospice. As a key member of our medical team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care, leading clinical teams, and contributing to the development of our palliative care services.

Main Responsibilities
  • Liaise closely with consultant colleagues and work collaboratively with the multi-professional team to provide excellent patient care.
  • Participate in the weekly in-patient ward round and provide medical leadership when needed.
  • Provide ward reviews and consultant ward-cover when needed, and provide clinical supervision and support to middle-grade staff.
  • Work closely with external healthcare professionals, including GPs, district nurses, and hospital specialists, to provide support, advice, and continuity of care.
  • Manage hospice patients within a multi-professional team approach, providing urgent and planned medical reviews as needed.
  • Complete holistic medical assessments and formulate clear management plans in collaboration with the rest of the team, patients, and their families.
  • Maintain ongoing medical care for Princess Alice Hospice patients, reviewing signs and symptoms and updating management plans accordingly.
  • Support and address the needs of carers and families, communicating with them as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and clear contemporaneous clinical records, updated electronically.
  • Provide excellent communication and handover of clinical information by telephone, email, or in writing, ensuring all relevant healthcare professionals are up to date.
  • Ensure continuity of care and attend community multi-professional team meetings as needed.
  • Coordinate with colleagues to prioritize admissions to and discharges from the inpatient unit, community caseload, and Wellbeing Centre.
  • Work flexibly with the medical team and provide cover for colleagues and the wider multi-professional team as needed.
  • Help with induction, education, and supervision of medical students and visiting doctors as appropriate.
General Requirements for Medical Staff
  • Participate in audit, research, or ongoing developments within the hospice, and develop their own audit or research as needed.
  • Participate in the medical department's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, including Monday meetings and the Wednesday/Thursday medical journal club.
  • Participate in teaching for the wider multi-professional team, hospice staff, and volunteers, and externally as needed.
  • Comply with CPD requirements as stipulated by the Royal Colleges.
  • Keep up to date with clinical mandatory training requirements.
  • Keep a portfolio of evidence, have an annual appraisal, and write a personal development plan (PDP) and objectives in line with GMC revalidation policies and procedures.
  • Maintain their own professional indemnity insurance to cover all work in the hospice.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and comply with all other aspects of the General Medical Council's Code of Professional Conduct/Good Medical Practice.
General Requirements for All Staff
  • Attend the induction programme.
  • Comply with Occupational Health procedures.
  • Attend any staff meetings, as appropriate, in discussion with the Medical Director.
  • Attend statutory training, fire training, moving and handling, and other health and safety issues.
  • Act at all times in a manner to safeguard the interests of patients and their families.
  • Be aware of and perform according to the Hospice's values and behaviours.
  • Monitor, record, and assist in investigations of any complaints from patients, visitors, and staff, reporting these to the Medical Director.
  • Be fully conversant with and participate in the Hospice's Governance Policies.
  • Be aware of personal and others' responsibility as defined in the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH regulations.
