Southampton, Southampton, United Kingdom ECO Magazine Full time
About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic oceanographer to join our team at ECO Magazine in a new Research Scientist position in marine biogeochemistry and physical oceanography. This role will involve investigating the impact of ocean circulation variability on air-sea CO2 fluxes and carbon accumulation in the North Atlantic.

As a member of our Ocean Biogeosciences group, you will play a central role in two exciting, multi-disciplinary UK-US projects. Your specific responsibilities will include investigating the impact of deep Gulf Stream waters on CO2 uptake, primarily through the response of the biological carbon pump to high nutrient waters as they are mixed into surface layers on their transit northwards.

You will also be involved in close collaboration with colleagues in the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate (MPOC) and Marine Systems Modelling (MSM) groups within ECO Magazine, as well as with partners across the UK and US.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need a PhD or equivalent in oceanography or a related quantitative field, such as chemistry, physics, or environmental science. You should have a strong understanding of ocean biogeochemistry, ocean circulation, and climate research, as well as expertise in data analysis and good quantitative competencies.

We offer a generous set of benefits, including 28 days annual leave, plus 3.5 local closure days and 8 public bank holidays, and a contributory Group Personal Pension Plan. We also have a hybrid working approach, where staff can work from home up to 2 days per week.

We can support visa applications where required, and for overseas applicants who are willing to move to the UK, we may be able to offer financial support with relocation.
