Company Overview

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is a leading global pharmaceutical company dedicated to improving the quality of human life. Our mission is to help people do more, feel better and live longer.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Scientist to join our Biomarker and Bioanalytical Platform (BBP) department in Precision Medicine (PMed). The successful candidate will work on clinical translational projects across GSK's respiratory, immunology, and emerging specialties portfolio.

The role involves generating data sets to increase the understanding of disease heterogeneity, drug's mechanism of action, and patient responses to treatment at the molecular level. This requires performing routine histological and cutting-edge spatial-omic and single cell experiments on clinical trial patient biopsies.

Job Description

  • Histotechnology: Perform routine histotechnology including biopsy processing, microtomy, histochemical staining and slide scanning to QC and prepare samples for downstream spatial or SC analysis. Process various matrices for single-cell/nuclei analysis, using the Chromium X and Next Generation Sequencing.
  • Lab Compliance: Compile QC reports and write standard operating procedures, analytical methods, and protocols and record data in-line with GCP lab standards.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams including Translational Research, Translational Sciences, Precision Medicine, HBSM, and Pathology.
  • Professional Development: Provide necessary training and help troubleshoot issues within the team. Develop trusted connections in the scientific community through meetings, publications and presentations at conferences hosted by professional societies.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: Master's degree in biological sciences or a relevant scientific field (e.g., immunology, molecular biology, cancer biology, neurobiology, genomics).
  • Experience: Skilled in routine histology (biopsy processing, microtomy, histochemical staining and slide scanning). Experienced in processing various tissues for single-cell/nuclei analysis, and familiar with using the Chromium X. Experienced in working with spatial-omic platforms Visium and Xenium, including the design, implementation and troubleshooting of spatial-omics experiments.
  • Team Player: Familiar with working in a matrixed environment, on multiple projects, and be able to meet strict deadlines.

Salary and Benefits

This position offers a competitive salary of £80,000 - £110,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

What We Offer

GSK offers a dynamic and supportive work environment, with opportunities for career growth and development. We provide a range of benefits, including flexible working arrangements, annual leave entitlements, and access to employee assistance programs.
