Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Media Relations Specialist to join our team at the Food and Drink Federation. As a key member of our communications team, you will play a central role in shaping the industry's narrative and promoting its positive reputation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement effective media relations strategies to support our key policy aims and industry initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with trade, national, broadcast, and specialist journalists, providing them with timely and accurate information.
  • Write and disseminate press releases, reactive statements, feature articles, and messaging documents that showcase the industry's achievements and promote its interests.
  • Support colleagues in preparing for media appearances, podcasts, briefings, and roundtables, ensuring they are well-prepared and confident.
  • Provide expert advice and counsel to colleagues, members, and committees on media-related matters.
  • Oversee the smooth operation of the press office, ensuring that databases, licenses, contacts lists, and monitoring processes are up-to-date and efficient.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement communications strategies that align with the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Stay abreast of the news agenda, monitoring social media and key topics affecting the industry, and develop a deep understanding of the issues that impact our members.
  • Deputize for the Head of Media Relations in their absence, including chairing meetings with relevant teams.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota for the FDF Press Office, providing 24/7 support and coverage.

Requirements:

  • Significant experience working in a frontline media role, either in-house or in an agency.
  • A passion for media and a natural ability to follow the news agenda.
  • A strong sense of what makes a good story, with examples of proactively generating news coverage.
  • Hands-on experience with national, trade, and broadcast journalists.
  • Solid writing skills, able to write for different styles and audiences.
  • A curious mindset, with the ability to quickly grasp complex topics and contentious issues.
  • The ability to work at pace in a busy press office, managing workload and priorities effectively.
  • Strong communications skills, comfortable briefing, advising, and influencing colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Lots of ideas and fresh thinking, proactively suggesting PR tactics that support our business strategy.
  • A keen eye for detail and a collaborative mindset, happy working with and supporting other teams.
