PhD Studentship: Optimizing Offshore Wind-Hydrogen Systems

Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team at the University of Nottingham and contribute to a groundbreaking research project focused on the future of offshore wind-hydrogen systems. This exciting opportunity will allow you to delve into the complexities of designing, operating, and maintaining these innovative energy systems.

Project Overview

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events underscores the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. Offshore wind power has emerged as a key player in this transition, but its intermittent nature presents challenges. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy, offers a promising solution for long-term energy storage and grid stability.

This research project aims to develop a comprehensive mathematical modeling framework to assess and optimize various aspects of offshore wind-hydrogen systems (OWHS). Your work will encompass:

  • Innovative OWHS designs
  • Novel operation and maintenance strategies
  • End-of-life strategies for sustainable decommissioning

The project will consider a wide range of factors, including environmental impacts, regulatory guidelines, operational conditions, and economic viability. By integrating these diverse perspectives, you will contribute to the development of safe, environmentally responsible, and economically sound OWHS.

Your Contribution

As a PhD student, you will work closely with leading researchers in resilience engineering, contributing to cutting-edge research and gaining valuable experience in:

  • Mathematical modeling and simulation
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Technical report writing and scientific communication

This opportunity will equip you with the skills and knowledge to make a significant impact on the future of renewable energy.

Qualifications

We are seeking enthusiastic graduates with a strong academic background in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a related discipline. A first-class degree at integrated Master's level or a relevant MSc is preferred. In exceptional circumstances, a 2:1 degree may be considered.
