PhD Researcher: Optimizing Offshore Wind-Hydrogen Systems
2 months ago
Project Overview
The University of Nottingham is seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to work on a project focused on future-proofing offshore wind-hydrogen systems. The successful candidate will develop a mathematical modelling framework to assess and optimize offshore wind-hydrogen system designs, operation regimes, operation and maintenance strategies, and end-of-life strategies.
Background
The increasing frequency of natural disasters and climate change highlights the need for sustainable energy solutions. Offshore wind has been identified as a key component of the UK's energy mix, but its intermittent nature poses challenges. Energy storage technologies, such as green hydrogen produced by electrolysis using renewable energy, are critical for exploiting renewable resources. However, ensuring the safety and minimizing environmental impact of wind-generated green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation is a pressing issue.
Research Objectives
The proposed project will involve simulation and analysis of innovative offshore wind-hydrogen system designs, novel operation and maintenance strategies, and potential end-of-life strategies. The researcher will also consider changes in marine environments, governmental guidance, regulations, operating conditions, production needs, location restrictions, wildlife habitats, and other critical factors.
Methodology
The project will employ a comprehensive approach to assess and optimize the safety, environmental, and economic aspects of future offshore wind-hydrogen systems. The researcher will develop a mathematical modelling framework to provide key knowledge for the deployment of future offshore wind farms and hydrogen production, storage, and transportation systems.
Deliverables
The successful candidate will be expected to deliver a PhD thesis, research papers, and presentations at international conferences. The project will also contribute to the development of a tool to comprehensively assess and optimize offshore wind-hydrogen systems.
Requirements
The University of Nottingham requires an enthusiastic graduate with a 1st class degree in engineering, computer science, maths, or a relevant discipline, at integrated Master's level or with a relevant MSc. The candidate should have excellent communication and teamwork skills, and be able to work independently.
