About the Role

We are seeking a Creative Book Designer for Children's Fiction, who will be an integral part of our design team in the Fiction department. This role involves supporting the Art Director and design team with administrative tasks, designing and developing fiction titles, and learning about consumer trends and market awareness to help develop new concepts.

Your Responsibilities

  1. Support the Design Team: Assist the Art Director and design team with admin tasks such as invoicing, contracts, file management, and reprints.
  2. Design and Development: Help support the design and development of fiction titles for children aged 6-12 and young adult titles (12-16+). Ensure designs align with the publishing strategy.
  3. Market Awareness: Stay updated on relevant consumer, trend, and market awareness to develop new concepts for covers and interior artwork.
  4. Talent Identification: Identify new illustrators and talent to bring to the list while considering diversity and inclusion strategies.
  5. Backlist Opportunities: Identify opportunities to develop the backlist and trend-led concepts (IP).
  6. Production Support: Help the team deliver front list books and reprints to production on time.
  7. Representation: Positively represent and promote Farshore & Electric Monkey, including agents, authors, and illustrators on social media.

During Your First Six Months

  • Identify new illustration talent to bring to the Fiction and Electric Monkey list.
  • Develop strong relationships with the Fiction and wider team.
  • Contribute ideas to a new Fiction book by being outward-facing, flexible, and market aware.
  • Support the importance of diversity and inclusion.
  • Offer key support to the Art Director and wider team.
  • Proficiently deliver backlist reprint titles to Production on time.
  • Learn the technical setup of InDesign files for print.
  • Actively network and share your knowledge with the wider team.

What We Offer

As a Creative Book Designer for Children's Fiction, you can expect a competitive salary of £35,000 - £40,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits. You will work in a hybrid model with 3 days in the office and enjoy 28 days holiday plus bank holidays, enhanced pay for maternity, paternity, adoption, and shared parental leave, private healthcare cover, and life assurance. Requirements

  • Creative flair and passion for design, ideally with a particular interest in children's and young adult fiction books – cover design and page design.
  • Good team player who is focused on supporting the design team and championing our fiction and young adult books.
  • Self-motivated with a strong drive to learn new skills and develop.
  • Superb organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for both internal and external meetings.
  • Vision and ambition to make the Fiction list a commercial success.
  • Ideally with relevant consumer, trend, and market awareness.
  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
