Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and reliable Refuse Loader to join our team at Essex County Council. As a Refuse Loader, you will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our communities by collecting and disposing of household and commercial waste.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and dispose of household and commercial waste from various locations, including residential areas, shops, schools, and other public spaces.
  • Operate a range of refuse containers, including household bins, plastic sacks, wheelie bins, and other equipment.
  • Act as a reversing assistant and assist the driver in the safe maneuvering of the vehicle on the round or at the disposal location.
  • Deliver sacks, bins, containers, leaflets, and other promotional materials as instructed.
  • Operate compaction and bin lifting equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure that bin lifting and compaction equipment is secured correctly when the vehicle is in transit.
  • Clear up spillages associated with waste and recycling presented for collection in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Work flexibly to ensure that all waste management services operate effectively and efficiently, assisting other crew members, teams, and supervisors as instructed.
  • Record and report relevant information relating to collections, and deal with issues and queries from residents/customers in a courteous, responsible, and impartial manner.
  • Report defects to vehicles and equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Assist in the washing of the refuse collection vehicle and ensure it is maintained in a clean and tidy condition.

Requirements

  • Experience of dealing with members of the public in some capacity.
  • Experience of undertaking refuse and recycling collections or similar operations.
  • Experience of providing good customer service.
