Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality midwifery care to women and their families in a variety of settings, including the alongside midwifery-led unit. This will involve engaging with women and their families to promote physiological birth and person-centred care, and advocating for their choices.

The midwife will be competent in a range of midwifery skills, including venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing, maternal and neonatal resuscitation, and water births. A NIPE-trained midwife is desirable, but training can be provided.

The midwife will also be responsible for supervising healthcare support workers, student midwives, and junior qualified staff, and will participate in regular meetings with ward/unit staff.

  • Aromatherapy training
  • Hypnobirthing training
  • Experience of working in all areas of maternity services, particularly birthing areas
  • Experience mentoring students
  • Participation in audit
Working with the Team

The midwife will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality care to women and their families. This will involve effective communication with healthcare professionals and other personnel, and a commitment to promoting relationships to enhance the quality of care.

The midwife will also be responsible for disseminating Trust policies and information as required, and will participate in the development of Clinical Governance initiatives.

Education and Development

The midwife will be responsible for contributing to an active and effective learning environment for junior staff, and will participate in the clinical teaching of all learners. They will also be responsible for updating their knowledge and skills to develop professionally, and will incorporate research findings into practice.

The midwife will also be responsible for maintaining clinical competence and accepting responsibility for their own professional development and updating, including annual mandatory updating. They will facilitate the development of other midwives to achieve and maintain competencies.
