Senior Legal Counsel

Job Summary
The London Borough of Lewisham is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Legal Counsel to lead the Place team within the Legal Services department. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for providing complex legal advice and assistance to the council, managing a team of lawyers, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal advice and assistance to the council on a wide range of matters, including planning, property, environmental, contracts, education, and employment law.
- Manage and lead a team of lawyers, providing guidance, support, and training to ensure they are equipped to deliver high-quality legal services.
- Deputise for the Head of Legal Services as required, taking on additional responsibilities and ensuring the smooth operation of the department.
- Allocate work to team members, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively, and that staff are adequately trained and developed.
- Advising senior officers, the Mayor, and Cabinet on legal matters, providing clear and concise advice to inform decision-making.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the department's strategy, working closely with other teams to achieve shared goals.
- Project manage major tasks and initiatives, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required standard.
- Manage the finances and human resources of the team, ensuring that business plan objectives are met and that the team is equipped to deliver high-quality services.
- Stay up-to-date with current legal and professional requirements, sharing knowledge and expertise with colleagues to ensure that the team is well-informed and equipped to deliver high-quality services.
Requirements
- A current practicing certificate (either as a Barrister, Solicitor, or Legal Executive)
- A can-do attitude with the confidence to lead and develop a team
- Experience of managing a team
- Strong experience in at least one of the following areas of law: regeneration, property, procurement and contracts, planning, environmental law and public realm, commercial law
- Ability to anticipate problems and solve them accordingly
- Dependable and self-reliant
- Experience working in a local government setting
- May be required to attend committees occasionally
