Unlocking the Code: PhD Studentship in AI-Driven Codon Usage Research

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time
About the Project

The University of Cambridge is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team in the field of artificial intelligence and genomics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that aims to unravel the underlying mechanism by which codon-level information regulates translation.

Project Overview

The genetic code contains 61 codons encoding 20 amino acids, and most amino acids are therefore encoded by two or more 'synonymous' codons. Despite producing the same protein, the choice of one synonymous codon over another plays an important role in gene regulation. This project uses artificial intelligence (AI) to study the regulation of translation and understand the impact of codon usage on gene regulation.

Research Objectives
  • To develop and apply cutting-edge deep learning techniques to study the regulation of translation.
  • To investigate the impact of codon usage on gene regulation and protein synthesis.
  • To explore the potential therapeutic applications of understanding codon-level regulation of translation.
Methodology

The project will involve the development and application of AI models to study the regulation of translation. The successful candidate will work closely with the supervisor to design and implement the research plan, collect and analyze data, and interpret the results.

Requirements

We welcome applications from recent graduates or final-year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a First/Upper Second Class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognized university worldwide. The successful candidate will have a strong background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, and excellent programming skills.

What We Offer

The University of Cambridge offers a competitive studentship package, including a stipend, tuition fees, and research expenses. The successful candidate will also have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and a vibrant research community.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit your application through the University of Cambridge's online application system. The application should include a cover letter, CV, and academic transcripts. The deadline for applications is [insert deadline].
