Job Overview

The Whittington Health Phlebotomy Service provides blood testing services for over 65,000 patients across Haringey and Islington, with plans to expand with the introduction of the Wood Green Community Diagnostic Centre.

Main Duties
  1. To perform venepuncture on patients as requested by clinicians, doctors, and healthcare professionals, ensuring samples are suitable for analysis.
  2. To supervise and train junior phlebotomy team members.
  3. To provide phlebotomy services to inpatients, outpatients, and GP practices within Whittington Health and surrounding areas.
  4. To collect blood samples safely and maintain clinical standards.
  5. To ensure accurate sample labeling and tracking.
  6. To have knowledge of the Swift Queue system or demonstrate basic IT skills.
  7. To cover clinics or wards at short notice.
  8. To deal with patients with special needs.
  9. To take blood samples from difficult areas.
  10. To develop skills in training and managing junior staff.
  11. To take on extra duties, such as GTT tests and specialized tests.

Detailed Job Description and ResponsibilitiesCommunication
  1. To ensure effective communication with staff, patients, and relatives, maintaining confidentiality.
  2. To communicate clearly with the phlebotomy team and report issues to the Phlebotomy Manager.
  3. To work with medical, nursing, laboratory, and phlebotomy staff to provide a rapid collection service.
  4. To ensure all relevant information is relayed to clinical, nursing, or laboratory staff.
  5. To demonstrate customer care skills when dealing with visitors, staff, and patients.
  6. To identify special needs for individual patients and communicate accordingly.
Patient Care
  1. To cooperate with clinical, administrative, and managerial colleagues to understand roles and patient priorities.
  2. To deliver care to all patients, respecting their values, customs, gender, race, culture, religion, or preferences.
  3. To deliver care that upholds patients' privacy and dignity.
  4. To report clinical concerns or abnormalities to registered professionals.
  5. To check equipment and report defects.
  6. To receive, check, and unpack deliveries and report stock levels.
Managing – People and Resources
  1. To supervise the phlebotomy team daily and escalate issues to the Phlebotomy Manager.
  2. To maintain adequate stock levels of blood collection bottles and consumables.
  3. To ensure new/junior members follow Standard Operating Procedures.
  4. To ensure new phlebotomists follow the training program.
Personal and People Development
  1. To ensure all phlebotomists follow policies and recommendations for accreditation.
  2. To act as a role model for other phlebotomy staff.
  3. To assist with training and supervision of junior learners.
  4. To participate in yearly appraisals and annual staff reviews.
  5. To participate in the Trust Mandatory Training Program.
Physical Skills
  1. To demonstrate confidence in dealing with body fluids and hazardous substances.
  2. To have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  3. To comfort and reassure patients.
  4. To be confident in drawing blood from critically ill, vulnerable, and elderly patients.
Health and Safety, Security, and Trust Policies
  1. To ensure all phlebotomists understand and comply with Trust Policies and Procedures.
  2. To understand and adhere to Trust policies and infection control principal standards.
  3. To be responsible for daily cleaning of phlebotomy work areas.
  4. To respect patient confidentiality and follow Data Protection Act and Caldicott principles.
  5. To follow record-keeping guidelines and Freedom of Information Act.
  6. To be aware of individual responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Quality
  1. To collect blood samples from patients in any clinical setting as requested.
  2. To ensure identification details are checked before phlebotomy procedures.
  3. To collect blood samples for various tests, following correct volumes and tubes.
  4. To label sample tubes with patient details.
  5. To maintain blood sample quality at all stages.
  6. To participate in research, audit, and quality initiatives.
  7. To handle and process blood samples appropriately.
  8. To contribute to continuous quality and service improvement.
