Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Newcastle University Full time

**About the Opportunity**

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Assistant/Associate to join our team at Newcastle University, focusing on data sonification for planetaria.

This exciting opportunity is part of a new project between academics at Newcastle University and Northumbria University, planetariums and science centres across the UK, and a planetarium software company. The goal is to present astronomical objects and concepts with sound as a complement to standard visual methods.

The successful candidate will take leadership on developing software for a "sonification toolkit", designed to enable planetarium presenters to easily create their own audio files via sonification. This role involves working directly with Dr Chris Harrison and being embedded within an exciting new "sonification hub" across both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.

We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, including recent graduates with coding experience, early-career astronomers looking for experience in high-impact coding projects, or individuals with technical sonification experience.

**Key Responsibilities**

  • Developing software for a "sonification toolkit" to enable easy creation of audio files via sonification.
  • Working with online astronomical databases and providing options for producing sounds.
  • Collaborating with the "sonification hub" across both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.

**Requirements**

  • Experience working with code for analysing datasets, including fitting models to data, interpolation of data, and cleaning data (ideally using Python).
  • Strong working knowledge of methods and techniques suitable for collaborative software development with online repositories.
  • Demonstrable outputs from programming projects, including shared code repositories, and/or research articles.

**Estimated Salary:** £32,296 - £34,866 per annum.
