We are seeking a highly motivated Statistical Geneticist to join our dynamic research team at Newcastle University.
Job Description:- Perform large-scale genetic analyses on cohort data, including GWAS, fine mapping, and polygenic score analysis.
- Conduct quality control and data harmonisation for clinical, genetic, and environmental data across cohorts.
- Analyse genetic, phenotypic, environmental, and other relevant data within large population cohorts such as UK Biobank and 100K Genomes Project.
The successful candidate will be based at our Newcastle Upon Tyne campus, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and fantastic transport links. You will join the world-class, multidisciplinary Newcastle Mitochondrial Research Group, renowned for their extensive experience in characterising mitochondrial function in both health and disease.
Key Responsibilities:- Design and implement large-scale genetic analyses to define nuclear determinants of mitochondrial DNA disease phenotypes.
- Lead the experimental planning and coordination of research projects, working under the guidance of an academic or Principal Investigator.
- Develop and carry out specified projects using appropriate techniques and equipment, with advice and support where required.
- Contribute to grant applications submitted by others, and develop own research objectives and proposals for funding.
You will have the opportunity to work closely with NHS clinical activities, bridging basic and translational science to advance the understanding of mitochondrial biology and develop new therapies for patients and families.
Requirements:- Good honours degree (or equivalent) with some subject knowledge in the relevant area.
- PhD in the research area is required.
- Experience of working within a Unix/Linux HPC or cloud computing environment.
- Competence in at least one statistical programming language, such as R or Python.
- High-level analytical ability with attention to detail.
In return, we offer a competitive salary, £32,296 to £45,163 per annum, depending on experience, plus excellent benefits, including a generous holiday package, pension schemes, and health and wellbeing initiatives.
