Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join our haematology team at King's College Hospital, where you will play a crucial role in caring for patients with acute porphyria as part of a nationally commissioned highly specialised service.

The job involves conducting outpatient clinics, remote management of patients across the country by telephone and email, inpatient care, support for the porphyria homecare nursing service, teaching and liaison with haematology and porphyria laboratories. You will work flexibly from home and in outreach clinics at other hospitals, with approximately one day per week spent in King's College Hospital.

As a Haematology Specialist, you will have opportunities to take part in research, including clinical trials of novel treatments, and receive training on managing patients with acute porphyria.

Main Duties
  1. Conduct outpatient clinics for patients with acute porphyria in King's College Hospital (typically once per week) and at other hospitals across England (typically once per month).
  2. Provide telephone/email advice to other hospitals across the UK on the investigation and management of patients admitted with possible or established acute porphyria.
  3. Give telephone/email advice to patients with acute porphyria across England.
  4. Review inpatients at King's College Hospital admitted with acute porphyria or related problems (typically 5 – 10 per year).
  5. Teach medical, nursing and laboratory staff about clinical aspects of porphyria.
  6. Offer clinical advice and support to the porphyria and haematology laboratories involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with acute porphyria.
  7. Take part in laboratory, translational and clinical research, including clinical trials, of patients with acute porphyria.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide a high quality care service to patients together with other colleagues.
  2. Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis.
  3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals.
  5. Contribute to the Care Group's research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  6. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies.
Requirements
  • Familiarity with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
  • Experience in all aspects of haematology culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Experience of clinical and translational research.
  • Publication of research, relevant review articles or case reports.
Benefits

You will receive a competitive salary of £105,504 - £139,882 per annum, excluding London Zone Allowance. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills and experience in haematology while contributing to the care of patients with acute porphyria.
