We are an organisation that operates and maintains the railway infrastructure 24/7 365 days a year. Our passengers and freight users are at the heart of everything we do, and we help connect people to their friends and families and get goods to their destination safely and efficiently.

The Central route covers a major part of the national rail network, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. The planned HS2 railway includes stops in Birmingham and Solihull, providing much-needed additional capacity on the rail network and faster journeys for passengers. East West Rail will also re-establish a rail link between Cambridge and Oxford and improve connectivity within the region.

This role is for a Senior Project Engineer (buildings) who will manage the use of appropriate engineering standards in relation to design and construction, on all projects within the national programme and check whether they comply with legislation, railway group and company standards. To monitor whether suitably qualified and experienced staff are employed to control engineering aspects of all projects within the functional discipline. Lead the Building Project Engineers in delivering the engineering assurance of the wider Works Delivery internal and external delivery of works.

About the Job

  • You will implement digital railway systems and procedures to deliver a cost-effective, high-quality, and safe approach to design, construction, commissioning, and other technical activities on relevant projects.
  • You will monitor the competence of all project engineers working on projects associated with the digital railway programme outputs and provide functional guidance, direction, and briefing.
  • You will apply engineering controls and procedures to all projects and check whether all design and construction contracts include reference to appropriate railway group and company standards applicable to their discipline.
  • You will apply relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all projects and check whether the environmental aspects of all projects are managed in accordance with environmental policy.
  • You will monitor all projects for compliance with railway group and company standards and digital railway programme project control procedures.
  • You will advise project and programme management in respect of all construction activities, testing, and commissioning, and site supervision.
  • You will assure whether contractors design, construction, and specialist personnel are competent.

What We Are Looking For

  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.
  • Chartered status or equivalent in the particular discipline.
  • Appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works.
