Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to fill the role of Corrections Officer. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the public, staff, and supervisees within our correctional facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide security and custody of adult supervisees within the institution and during transportation
  • Supervise daily activities, observe and record behavior and movement to ensure safe and secure confinement
  • Interact with visitors, staff, supervisees, and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations
  • Contribute to the public safety mission through the use of evidence-based practices and principles

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures
  • Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Ability to successfully complete pre-employment requirements, including medical screening, background check, and drug testing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Stable employment history
  • Military or related criminal justice experience
  • Coursework at a community college, college, or university
  • Bi-lingual and multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply

Working Conditions

  • This is a wage position with limited hours (1,500 hours per agency per 12-month period)
  • Wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year
  • Wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period
