Main Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinical psychologist to join our team as the lead psychologist for the Mental Health Liaison and Psychological Medicine Service based in the Tower Hamlets Town Hall in Whitechapel. The role involves supervising psychology trainees, supporting and containing the staff team, providing brief psychological interventions to patients on the medical wards, and providing support to the senior leadership team on a day-to-day basis.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced clinical psychologist to join our team. The successful candidate will have a doctoral level qualification in clinical psychology and substantial experience of working as a qualified clinical or counselling psychologist in an acute/severe mental health setting.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop and direct the provision of an autonomous and systematic specialist clinical psychology service in the MHL service.
  2. Provide evidence-based psychological therapies service for people referred to the Mental Health Liaison Service.
  3. Operate as an integrated member of the team, placing the patient at the centre of service planning and delivery.
  4. Develop and support the psychosocial work of other staff through teaching, training, supervision, and consultation.
  5. Provide specialist advice to the hospital teams and voluntary sector agencies concerning the assessment, treatment, and management of patients accessing the team.
Person Specification
Education/Qualification/training
Essential
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalence and able to demonstrate eligibility for BPS CPsychol (Chartered Psychologist).
  • Clinical supervision training for doctoral psychology trainees.
  • Breakaway Training.
  • Additional relevant clinical and/or managerial knowledge and skills acquired through formal training, long or short courses, formal supervision (individual and/or group), structured self-study or experience (or a combination of these) to an appropriate level approved by the Head of Psychology and demonstrated by certification, documented supervision logs, management appraisal documentation and/or assessment at interview.
Desirable
  • Further training in neuropsychology. Relevant specialist training or qualifications. Management training.
Experience
Essential
  • Substantial experience of working as a qualified Clinical or counselling Psychologist including substantial post-qualification experience within an acute/severe mental health setting. Well-developed experience of work with people with severe, complex and chronic mental health and physical health problems.
  • Work within at least two therapy modalities.
  • Experience of teaching, training, and supervising professional and clinical practice of qualified and unqualified staff.
Desirable
  • Experience of working in Health psychology services, neuropsychology services, or with older adults.
  • Experience of developing and delivering specialist training programmes.
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care. Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies with adult clients with psychosis and complex mental health needs.
  • Planning and organisational skills: Aware of the potential impact of discrimination & disadvantage on mental health.
  • Flexibility: Able to be flexible and adapt approach according to need.
