Design Engineer (Structures) Job Description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer (Structures) to join our team. As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for undertaking civil, structural, and geotechnical design and checking tasks from client briefs with supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Undertake civil, structural, and geotechnical design and checking tasks from client briefs with regular supervision.
  2. Develop concept and detailed design approaches using appropriate tools to suit the complexity of the task.
  3. Use knowledge, skills, and experience to identify and implement practical, cost-effective, and safe solutions in accordance with statutory legislation, the suite of Eurocodes, and other approved industry body guidance and established best practice.
  4. Have working knowledge of industry-standard structural/geotechnical software packages with a basic understanding of their limitations as well as capability of producing sketches to scale by hand and/or using CAD.
  5. Understand applicable legislation, particularly The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
  6. Use knowledge and experience to identify and mitigate health, safety, and environmental risks.
  7. Consider whether the methods adopted provide a safe system of work and are adequately documented.
  8. Undertake design risk assessments so that risks are designed out where possible. Ensure all residual risks are communicated via drawings.

Requirements:

  1. BEng (Hons) degree in civil, structural, or geotechnical engineering.
  2. CITB Construction Skills Certification Scheme Card.
  3. Evidence of commitment to continued professional development via relevant industry courses, training, and seminars.
  4. Typically, a minimum of 2 years relevant post-graduate experience.
  5. Good working understanding of basic design tools and methods.
  6. Understanding of fundamental engineering principles, physics, and statics.
  7. Mainstream construction and demolition methods.

Desirable:

  1. MEng (Hons) degree in civil, structural, or geotechnical engineering.
  2. MSc degree in civil, structural, or geotechnical engineering.
  3. Basic understanding of complex design tools (e.g., 3D finite element analysis).
