Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Science Technician to join our team at USP College. As a Science Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting our students in practical lessons and project work, providing technical assistance and guidance to ensure their success.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with teaching staff in all engineering areas, supporting students during practical lessons and project work, providing practical assistance in a safe and effective manner.
  • Prepare required apparatus for practical lessons and demonstrations, supplying equipment, dismantling, and returning to store, to keep all equipment in perfect working order.
  • Treat and dispose of used materials, including hazardous substances, and respond to actual and potential hazards.
  • Provide technical guidance to students in practical lessons, adhering to manufacturer usage and Health and Safety requirements.
  • Clean and maintain areas and apparatus throughout the year, carrying out routine maintenance and repair as necessary, to meet Health and Safety and college requirements.
  • Evaluate new workshop lessons to identify potential problems and suggest improvements, to provide the best support to curriculum and staff.
  • Maintain a computer database for the department, requesting new stock when necessary, and ensuring products are stored and labelled correctly and safely, for up to date reporting and information provision to management.
  • Ensure Health and Safety checks and measures are adhered to at all times, checking the safety of practical areas during the day, ensuring equipment is safe for use, to meet college policy and legislative requirements.
  • Comply with the Health & Safety Policy of the College and other instructions given as necessary, rectifying or reporting safety hazards or unsafe working arrangements, to adhere to policy and legislative requirements.
  • Work flexibly as part of the faculty team to cover all aspects of team provision and assist curriculum delivery.
  • Understand that safeguarding is a shared cross-college responsibility, taking ownership of embedding safeguarding practices into their remit as appropriate to their role within the organisation.
  • Prioritise and juggle various tasks, adhering to deadlines as required.
  • Deal with queries in a professional and calm manner.
  • Understand and apply appropriate procedures relating to equipment and Health & Safety.
  • Adhere to all policy and legislative practice during every activity of work, attending necessary training.
  • Keep up to date with current procedures and practice through continued professional development.
  • Deal with general maintenance queries.
  • Work on own initiative and take instruction when needed.
  • Pass a query to line management when necessary.
  • Write and maintain risk assessments for technician activities.
  • Commit to other duties compatible with the post held, which may reasonably be required from time to time.

Job Requirements:

  • A qualification in a Science subject to at least A Level or equivalent.
