Job Summary:

The Cashier - School Lunch Program Assistant will be responsible for performing routine cashiering and computer tasks in a school cafeteria. This role requires accuracy, attention to detail, as well as independent judgment and problem-solving skills to be fully experienced in relation to assigned areas of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enter pre-payments into the cash register before the cafeteria opens
  • Prepare the cash register for breakfast and lunch operations and set up change in the cash drawer
  • Monitor student dietary notes in the POS system to ensure students with food allergies avoid purchasing items that may trigger an allergic reaction
  • Accurately ring sales into the POS system, collect the correct amount charged for each individual meal, milk, or a la carte item, and provide accurate change to students
  • Understand the various meal patterns, meal components, and minimum serving requirements to meet the criteria of a reimbursable meal as regulated by National School Breakfast, Lunch, and Snack Programs and accurately ring into the POS system
  • Operate a variety of kitchen utensils to weigh, measure, mix, wash, peel, cut, grind, stir, strain, season, and knead foodstuffs for cooking, serving, and storing
  • Assist in the preparation of foods and serve food, utilizing knowledge of temperature requirements and spoilage
  • Inspect workstations for compliance with service standards
  • Keep records and requisitions for supplies/equipment as needed
  • Clean and sanitize workstations and equipment following all School Lunch policies and procedures
  • Count cash drawer and wrap money in a secure location at the end of each day, record register and school totals on a daily record form, prepare a bank deposit slip, and secure it in a locked or tamper-resistant bank bag
  • Follow the rules, regulations, and policies of the school lunch program, which includes preventing overt identification of students' eligibility status to staff and other students
  • Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy; report any problems or complaints to the Cook Manager
  • Interact in a friendly, helpful manner with staff, students, and visitors; respond to questions and requests in a positive manner
  • Promote good school and community relations by personal appearance, friendly attitude, and conversation
  • Attend staff meetings and in-services as required
  • Help stock food and supplies and general cleanup as time permits
  • Work cooperatively with all other food service employees
  • Adhere to rules of appropriate personal hygiene and dress
  • Maintain an orderly and clean work area
  • Perform specific duties and operate kitchen equipment as assigned (cash register, dish washer), report faulty equipment
  • Adhere to rigid sanitary standards in work practices and food handling, including appropriate glove usage
  • Work efficiently at specific assigned tasks and offer assistance to other personnel with their assignments when cashiering functions are not being performed
  • Assist the Cook Manager in other related duties as requested/assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Cook Manager or Food Service Manager
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical computation
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures
  • Ability to handle cash transactions
  • Ability to maintain basic records and files
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently during meal times
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
  • Ability to operate a computer and printer as needed to perform job duties
  • Ability to lift/unload food and supplies up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Maintain a neat personal appearance and good hygiene
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience handling cash
  • Must have working knowledge of basic math applications and computation skills
