About the Role:

The Ratings Officer is a vital member of the ship's crew, responsible for supporting various departments in the safe operation and maintenance of the vessel. This role involves a wide range of tasks, from assisting with navigation and cargo duties to performing maintenance and contributing to the security of the ship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Steer the ship and assist the Navigation Officer in navigational, operational, and cargo duties
  • Secure the ship to the dock and perform maintenance tasks in port
  • Contribute to the security of the vessel
  • Perform various job roles in the Engine Room department to gain experience and qualifications
  • Support hospitality and onboard services, including administration, reception, and customer-facing roles
  • Participate in training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge

Requirements:

  • No minimum academic standard required, but some companies may ask for a minimum of three GCSEs or Scottish standard grades
  • Pass a Seafarer Medical Certificate and complete basic STCW certificates for each role
  • Meet the requirements for a Rating Apprenticeship, which can be a paid opportunity to train on board ships and study at a college
