Main Responsibilities

The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant in Intensive Care to join our team. As a key member of our critical care department, you will be responsible for providing high-quality intensive care services to patients in our hospital.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and promoting multi-disciplinary teamwork within the specialty and associated critical care services
  • Ensuring evidence-based standards of care for all patients in collaboration with consultant colleagues and adhering to clinical and quality standards as set in the Patients Charter
  • Participating in the formal teaching, practical training, and supervision of junior staff, including the professional supervision and management of non-consultant grade medical staff
  • Monitoring junior staff locum arrangements where appropriate and focusing on the professional development of trainees, both clinically and personally
Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Full registration with the GMC with licence to practice
  • FFICM or equivalent
  • CCT (or equivalent) with entry on Specialist Register for ICM or within six months of anticipated CCT date on the date of interview

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Additional degree or post-graduate qualification (PhD, MD etc)
  • Post-graduate prizes
  • MSc/Diploma/PG certification in Peri-operative medicine or equivalent
  • Management/leadership qualification
Clinical Skills and Training

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Higher training in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Advanced Life support (ALS)

Desirable skills and experience include:

  • Relevant medical experience including Anaesthesia
Experience

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Achieving GMC standards to be recognised as a clinical supervisor
  • Active regular participation in teaching and training of medical and para-medical colleagues
  • Active consistent engagement with clinical audit and quality improvement

Desirable experience includes:

  • Achieved GMC standards to be recognised as an educational supervisor
  • Extensive/formal experience in medical education including ICM
  • Life support course instructor
  • Presentations at regional and national meetings and/or Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Skills and Knowledge

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Good communication Skills
  • Able to prioritise/cope with stressful situations
  • Clear understanding of local/wider NHS management structures
  • Awareness of ethical and legal issues

Desirable skills and knowledge include:

  • Leadership in evidence-based transformation of patient care
