Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. As a key member of our Anaesthetic Department, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our services.

Main Responsibilities

  • Participate in the provision of a safe, effective, and efficient Anaesthetic service, with flexibility to adapt to changing commitments.
  • Contribute to the Anaesthetic consultant on-call rota and be prepared to work on both sites of the Trust.
  • Assist in the provision of Critical Care services and participate in the professional supervision, management, support, and teaching of Anaesthetic trainees.
  • Be familiar with the Royal College of Anaesthetists curriculum for Junior Doctor training and contribute to their training requirements.
  • Organise and participate in teaching sessions for undergraduate students and post-graduate medical staff and other health professionals.
  • Participate fully in Clinical Governance, including reporting of incidents, investigation of serious incidents, and the effective handling of any complaints.
  • Participate in the Clinical Audit programme of the department and comply with the Trust's Clinical Governance processes.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness.
  • Support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients and participate in all aspects of the Directorate and Hospitals affairs.

Person Specification

  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent.
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent.
  • Full and Specialist registration for Anaesthesia with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained must show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) application in a non-CCT specialty awaiting approval.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Higher degree or qualification such as MSc or PhD.
  • Broad experience of working within the NHS.
  • Experience of teaching and training of undergraduates, medical and allied health professionals.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to anaesthetic trainees of all levels and achieving GMC standards to be recognised as a clinical supervisor.
  • Formal educational qualification.
  • ALS/ATLS instructor, and PALS or APLS provider or instructor.

Desirable Attributes

  • Has experience of committee work and prepared to undertake committee work.
  • Evidence of leadership and team building, and potential for wider hospital/Trust leadership roles.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Ability to use Microsoft office packages, MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to use patient information systems.
  • Effective communicator - verbal and written.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership and organisational skills.
  • Enquiring, critical approach to work and a commitment to the practice of evidence-based medicine.
  • Recent experience/familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices.
  • Enthusiasm, resilience, and flexibility in a changing work environment.
