About the Role

The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) is a key component in the UK's strategy to reduce firearms criminality. As a Data and Information Governance Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the NABIS Systems & Information Team in ensuring the quality and integrity of information management practices across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure a high level of information assurance through the continuous improvement of information management practices, identifying areas of risk and advising on improvement activities.
  2. Correct force records within the NABIS database in accordance with legal obligations and policy, and process data quality work to correct information where possible.
  3. Liaise with business areas to identify training issues, recurring errors, and ways to improve poor information management practices.
  4. Conduct proactive audits and dip samples of NABIS systems and processes, highlighting data quality, information management, and security concerns.
  5. Monitor trends and anomalies within source data, reporting findings accurately and appropriately.
  6. Ensure the appropriate use of NABIS information assets and report any suspected misuse.
  7. Support the organisation in complying with the requirements of the Home Office in relation to information assurance, including MoPI guidance, the Data Protection Act, and Information Security controls.
  8. Support external training to ensure forces maximise opportunities through correct use of the NABIS database.
  9. Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Data Protection Act 1998, Government Security Classification Scheme, Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, and Freedom of Information Act 2000.
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  11. Good planning and organisation skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  1. Previous experience of police IT systems, such as Crimes, ICIS, IMS, QPulse, Discoverer, PNC, PND, and Business Objects.
  2. Training qualification or training experience, or be prepared to be trained as a trainer.
