Research Scientist

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

The University of Cambridge is seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to join the Soft Matter Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and conducting research objectives, proposals, and projects related to non-equilibrium statistical field theories.

The appointee will work on a four-fold path to address a wide range of non-equilibrium rare events in field-theoretic models. This will involve identifying reduced coordinates, calculating barrier crossing rates, finding the reduced quasi-potential landscape, and reconstructing the full noisy dynamics of the reduced model.

The role requires strong familiarity with statistical field theory, large deviation theory, and the ability to combine analytical and numerical skills to solve complex problems. The appointee will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required.

The project is structured into four work packages, with the successful candidate primarily working on WP1: New Numerical Tools and WP2: Nucleation in Active Matter. Contract extension beyond 24 months is possible for appointees who also have skills relevant to the remaining WPs.

The University of Cambridge values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity. The Department would particularly welcome applications from women, since women are, and have historically been, underrepresented on our research staff.
