Job Summary

The East GMSA Research Coordinator will play a crucial role in the coordination of research and innovation projects across a complex footprint, involving NHS providers, academic and industry partners, and other stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include managing the development and implementation of research and innovation activities, developing a good understanding of the genomic research/trials landscape, and monitoring progress against objectives/milestones.

The Research Coordinator will act as the first point of contact for the GMSA research agenda and provide a key link between the GMSA and NHSE with regards to key performance indicators and assurance evidence.

Main Duties

The Research Coordinator will be a key member of the core GMSA management team, working closely with the Clinical Director, Strategy Director, Innovation Director, senior clinical team members, and other regional GMSA Research Coordinators.

Internal Relationships:

This post will be a core member of the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance representative of the four NHS Trust Alliance Partners and build strong links with the East of England and East Midlands GLH, Local Genomic Laboratories (LGLs), and Clinical Genetics Services (CGS) across the region.

External Relationships:

NHSE/I Genomics Unit, National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres, NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, NIHR Clinical Research Networks (CRNs), NHS Trust Provider Research and Development departments, Higher Education Institutions, Health Innovation East (HIE) and East Midlands (HIEM), the Life Sciences Industry, and Cancer Alliances.

About Us

The East GMSA is an Alliance Partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Norfolk and Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will be employed by and located at the nearest NHS Trust Alliance Partner within the East GMSA.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Master's degree or equivalent level experience of working at a senior level in a specialist area
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Qualification in project or programme management or equivalent professional experience
  • PhD in a scientific area or evidence of understanding of research processes/environments

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Project or operational management experience working within an academic or NHS environment, working with researchers, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals at all levels of the organisation
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships
  • Understanding of the clinical trial process in the UK, including how individuals can participate in clinical research programmes
  • Understanding and experience of the UK research funding landscape, including experience of working with partners such as the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR)
  • Knowledge and experience of the NHS innovation landscape and partners such as the Academic Health Science Networks and what evidence is needed to influence adoption and spread of evidence across the NHS and particularly in the NHS Genomic Medicine Service
  • Understanding of issues surrounding research, including patient confidentiality, good clinical practice, and research governance
  • Experience of working with and influencing researchers, scientists, management, and clinicians/other professional staff
  • Experience of working with operational finance in a research/NHS setting
