This is a replacement appointment to join existing colleagues in a purpose-built centre integrated within a major trauma centre with full supporting facilities.

About the Role

The Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre serves a geographically based catchment in the North of England, from the Scottish Border down to the Lake District and Scarborough, with a population of one million. The centre has 4 HDU (two ventilated) and 20 rehabilitation beds. We run outreach clinics and have geographically based outreach specialist nursing and rehabilitation staff. The centre is supported by a specialist urologist, a specialist plastic surgeon, a hand surgeon, an intensivist, and a spinal surgical and neurosurgical team. In addition, there is psychological support, a dedicated social worker, an IT specialist, and audit support.

Main Responsibilities

The main priority for this post will be to deliver the highest clinical standards in the practice of spinal cord injured patients. The post holder will take a lead role within the multi-disciplinary team managing spinal cord injured patients. The post is based within the Spinal Cord Injuries Centre based within The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and serves a regional population of one million. The post holder will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1-2 years.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP/MRCS or appropriate specialist qualification
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC

Personal Attributes

  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GP's, nurses, and other agencies
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Resident within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital

Clinical Experience & Effectiveness

  • Out-patient and in-patient experience in the management of spinal cord injured patients
  • Evidence of clinical audit
  • Sound experience in all aspects of rehabilitation
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Acute Admissions (JCUH is a Major Trauma Centre)

Management & Administrative Experience

  • Evidence of working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands

Teaching & Training Experience

  • Experience of supervising/training junior medical staff
